Dancing In the Eye of the Storm

He takes her hand
leads her out to the dancefloor
The boys in the band
play “The Days of Wine & Roses” one more time
Servants stand by
holding trays full of cocktails and caviar
training their eyes
to see through marble and gold

Out on the street
a crowd is forming
So light on their feet
the dancers sense no warning

Dancing in the eye of the storm
Dancing in the eye of the storm
They are dancing in the eye of the storm

She takes his hand
leads him out to the courtyard
A warm evening wind
sends a shudder through the ivy on the walls
They’re drawn to the brink
by a kiss that tastes of starlight (and caviar)
under her mink
he finds a soft wilderness

High up above
a cloud is forming
Too lost in their love
to hear the hornets swarming

            (chorus)

Back in the ballroom she snaps her fingers
and Sambo comes running with a Cabernet
The sound of the front door impelled from it’s hinges
is lost in the drum and cymbals ricochet
As the dancers resume there’s a dissonant theme
spreading slowly through the music like a crimson stain
They are too drunk to notice the change in the rhythm
or the rain coming softly to the windowpanes

            (chorus)
